Dakota Wesleyan's music department to present 'Brahms Requiem'

Thursday, April 18, 2013

MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan continues with its tradition of large, collaborative spring concerts with a presentation of “Brahms Requiem” this Sunday with both choirs and DWU’s string ensemble.

The DWU music department will perform “Brahms Requiem” at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21, in the Sherman Center. The concert is free and open to all and will consist of the DWU Choral Union, Wesleyan Choir and LyricWood.

“Among other choral/orchestral requiems, Brahms’ masterpiece is an enigma,” said Dr. Clinton Desmond, DWU choral director. “The monumental ‘Ein deutsches Requiem’ premiered in Bremen, Germany, in 1868 and garnered immediate acclaim. Instead of using the traditional Catholic Requiem texts that serve to bless and pray for the soul of the departed, Brahms chose texts from Martin Luther’s Bible that sought to comfort the living.”

DWU’s Jenna Callies, of Mitchell, will perform the soprano solo while Jonathan Saeger, currently a doctoral student at Kent State University, Ohio, will be performing the baritone solos. Desmond met Saeger at Illinois State University, where they both graduated with their master’s degrees. Audiences will recognize Callies from DWU musicals, “Xanadu,” in which she played the female lead; “Damn Yankees” and also “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Callies also played Ariel in the Mitchell Area Community Theatre production of “Footloose.”
