What to Wear

It will get cold in Mitchell, we promise. 

  • Comfortable clothes and shoes. Most students wear sweats to class. 
  • A few dressy outfits and shoes for more formal affairs such as athletic banquets
  • Work-out clothes and shoes
  • Swimming suit for hotel hot tub excursions
  • Heavy coat, boots if you have them, mittens, hat 
  • Slippers 

  • For Your Room

    Come to campus and get a look at a dorm room or call the housing office beforehand and touch base to ask any questions you might have. 

    • Comforter/bedspread
    • Pillow
    • Bed linens (twin extra long)
    • Mattress pad
    • Pictures of family/home
    • Clothes hangers
    • Coffee Pot/mug 
    • Drinking cups, dishes and silverware 
    • Poster putty or 3M tabs for hanging up decorations 
    • Plastic containers with tight lids for storing snacks, detergent, etc.
    • Headphones/ear buds (so your music doesn't bother your roommate or neighbors)
    • Cell phone charger/s
    • Power strip with surge protection
    • Futon, small couch, or other seating
    • Desk lamp or bed lamp
    • TV/DVD-Player (there is a common area TV if you don’t bring one)
    • Small fan
    • Air freshener/scentsy
    • Small refrigerator/microwave 
    • Small shelving
    • Paper towels
    • Sewing kit, scissors, tools
    • Message board for your door

    Keep in mind that you’ll be sharing your bathroom and laundry facilities with other students.

    • Bathrobe

    • Shampoo
    • Shaving cream and razors
    • Shower catty
    • Laundry basket/bag
    • Laundry detergent
    • Dryer sheets
    • Roll of quarters

    • Good Things to Have

    Think about your daily activities and hobbies and bring what you need with you.

    • Access to money (i.e. bank account, bank card, credit card, etc.) Check to see if your local provider is here in Mitchell
    • A vehicle
    • Renter's insurance. Have your parents check their home owners insurance to see if you are covered under their policy
    • Key ring/Lanyard. We will issue you at least one key and one key fob
    • Flashlight
    • Batteries
    • Sports/recreation equipment - Ping pong is huge on campus
    • Nonperishable snacks for your room - you can't have too many


    As for what NOT to bring

    •  Do not bring everything you own! Space is a luxury when you are sharing a room
    • Halogen bulbs and/or lamps
    • Expensive jewelry or "priceless" items
    • Toasters, toaster ovens, hotplates, skillets
    • Air conditioners
    • Extension cords
    • Candles
    • Pets, waterbeds, nail picture hangers
    • Any weapon - Guns, Ammunition, or hunting knives

    Iron table, unless you use it often it just takes up too much room
