Print CollectionThe print collection consists of approximately 65,000 volumes and over 400 current magazine subscriptions. Library materials are indexed in the online catalog which is part of the South Dakota Library Network (SDLN) database. SDLN indexes the major collections throughout South Dakota.

Non-Print CollectionThe non-print collection consists of compact discs, DVDs, videotapes, audio cassettes, record albums, films, filmstrips, slides, audiovisual kits, and curriculum kits. These may be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Student's may use the Library's Preview Room, which is located in the lower level, to view videos.

Special CollectionsMcGovern Library houses various special collections made up of both print and non-print materials. Some materials in the Senator Francis Case, Senator George McGovern, and Jennewein Western History collections are housed in the University Archives on the library's second floor. Archival material in the Case Collection consists of letters and other papers, books and government documents from Case's congressional terms in office. The archives also contain political memorabilia, political photographs of Senator George McGovern. The Jennewein Western History Library consists of Western literature and history, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as papers and photographs located in the University Archives. Books from Senator McGovern's and Senator Case's personal collections may be found in the library's Main collection. The library also houses the Margaret Teufel Children's Collection, Jedediah Smith and Badger Clark Collections, and Preacher Henry Weston Smith memorabilia.
